Fashion Solutions for a Lazy Day

Dressing up on lazy days doesn’t have to be dreadful. Maryam Yusof shows you how to keep it simple yet stylish with the least amount of effort.

Though I write a lot of fashion articles, I must admit that on many days, I can be very lazy to dress up when heading to school and work.

It’s never fun to try to look decent when all I really want to do is lie in bed or lounge around in front of the TV in my pajamas and watch X Factor UK on repeat while screaming at the judges for their poor decisions.

On those days, I’m often banging my head against the wardrobe trying to figure out how to balance not putting any effort at all while appearing like I’m ready to take on the world.

However, with  my deadlines piling on faster than I can meet them, dressing up decently in the morning has lately become the least of my worries. Bring on the backpacks, sweatshirts, loose jeans and sandals – this is the lazy girl’s guide to getting dressed.

Say no to flip-flops

One of my biggest pet peeves has got to be flip-flops. I reach for my headphones when I hear someone’s flip-flops slapping against the floor. Besides being an ‘ear sore’, they aren’t visually appealing either and they make the wearer look extremely lazy.

One-colour palette magic

When all you’re thinking is ‘meh,’ sticking to one colour palette makes it easier to put together an outfit. My typical extreme lazy-day outfits are usually monochromic. They’re the easiest kind of outfit to put together.

Accessorise

You may be feeling lazy, but that doesn’t mean you should lay off the accessories! In fact, accessories can take your outfit from drab to fab, and colourful accessories in particular can help you add a pop of colour to your outfits.

A Little Makeup

When you feel lazy, it’s natural to want to lay off the makeup for the day. Sometimes, though, a bit of makeup can make the day seem a little better, so go for a hint of lip-gloss or eyeliner, at least.

Lazy days are the perfect time to make full use of your wardrobe staples. Here are some items that every girl should have for those lazy days when she’d rather sleep in instead of face the world.

Maxi dress

Surprisingly, a maxi dress is perfect for lazy days. Just slip it on and you’re done. You don’t have to worry about layering, colour palettes and all the other complicated things. All you really have to think about is what hijab to wear, which should be easy enough.

Loose Tops

When it comes to tops, my rule for lazy days is: the looser the better.  Long-sleeved sweatshirts, oversized cardigans, breezy cotton T-shirts and loose-fitting blouses should be a staple in every girl’s wardrobe.  Just pair with jeans and you’re good to go.

Boyfriend Jeans: The Sweatpants Alternative

Another pet peeve of mine is sweatpants. I get it; they’re deadly comfortable and they make you feel happy as you crawl into bed. Unfortunately, they’re exactly that – pants for sleep. So unless you’re heading for the gym or a run, please leave your sweatpants at home.

A better alternative would be boyfriend jeans. They’re basically sweatpants but in denim. They bring the same level of comfort but are much, much more stylish.

The Ubiquitous Breton Striped T-Shirt

There is something about this simple striped shirt that makes any lazy dresser look incredibly chic, and also, every Hollywood starlet seems to have one. Wear them with black trousers, colourful flats and a satchel, and you’ll be projecting effortless chic.

Blazer

Blazers are the favourite things to have in my closet. While a T-shirt and jeans combo may seem a bit more hobo than hobo-chic, throwing on a blazer can immediately make your outfit seem about 50 times more presentable.

Abayas

If these tips still seem to be too much of a hassle for you, you could take a note from our Middle Eastern sisters and wear an abaya over your pajamas. Total time taken to get ready: one minute.
